It is expected that across the UK it will benefit around 700,000 in the first year

The new Breathing Space scheme, originally outlined by Government in February 2020 following campaigning from the debt advice and wider sector, will go live on 4 May 2021. The 60-day breathing space period will see enforcement action from creditors halted and interest frozen for people with problem debt.

What are the benefits of breathing space scheme to debtors?

What are the eligibility criteria for breathing space scheme?

As per the UK government a debtor need to meet three criteria to be eligible for the breathing space scheme. These are:

  • The debtor agrees to access debt advice
  • The debtor must be assessed by a debt advisor, to confirm if they are actually facing debt problems
  • The debtor must not be in the breathing space scheme in the previous 12 months

As per a research more than 3 million people in UK are suffering from mental health and financial difficulties and this number is increasing every day. For such debtors who are not financially that stable and or have mental health issues and are unable to pay their debts, Breathing space scheme is a scheme for all such debtors.

Initially breathing space scheme was suggested in 2017 by conservative party, and was mostly welcomed by everyone, though it is yet to be implemented not before 2021.
